Moreno Valley is the largest place we serve and its housing is startlingly concentrated in one decade: 22,982 of its 57,381 units, just over 40 percent, were built in the 1980s. That is more houses of a single vintage than most of the towns on this site contain altogether, and it means an entire city arrives at the same roofing decision within a few years of itself.

Two more tornadoes formed in the same corner of the county that afternoon.

Fire exposure is higher than the city's flat middle suggests. About 28 percent of Moreno Valley is mapped as a very high fire hazard severity zone, mostly along the Box Springs Mountains and the eastern edge toward Gilman Springs Road, where the Gilman Fire ran 945 acres in August 2011.
